PolyMorph

I was part of Kairos Games, one of the 4 final teams of the 2013 Make Something Unreal Live competition backed by Epic Games, the Wellcome Trust, UKIE, nVidia, Logitech and Blue GFX, in association with the Gadget Show. This was an amazing opportunity for games design teams based in Europe to win the grand prize of an Unreal 4 licence.

The theme of the competition entries was ‘Mendelian Inheritance’. Our game, PolyMorph was chosen as a finalist and was developed over 5 months with the final 5 days of development done live at the Gadget Show Live in April.

Our team took second place and was awarded an Unreal Engine 3 Licence!

My role within the team was a programmer, I worked to create the core mechanics, AI, HUD and ScaleForm content in Flash.

Badgers Vs Turtles

BvT is a UDK iOS/ipad game created for the international Dare to be Digital competition. After pitching our game design to the Dare judges, our team of 5 moved to Dundee with the other teams for 9 weeks, hosted by Abertay University.

My role was lead programmer and it was my first time working with a mobile platform. I worked on:

  • Touch controls and camera - Pan, rotate and pinch to zoom
  • Grid management and character movement
  • Custom A* pathfinding for unit movement
  • Game states, turns and special swipe attacks
  • Built and coded the UI in Flash/Scaleform to UDK
  • Working with the artists to optimise materials models for mobile use

After 9 weeks of development the game was presented at the Dare Protoplay exhibition, where 10,000 members of the public played the game over 3 days. Giving us feedback on our work. They also voted for each of the 12 teams.

We didn’t win… However the game was very well received! It was especially popular as it was so family friendly.
